Ten questions that help hotel owners compare marketing agencies on hospitality experience, content quality, reporting and fit.
Hiring a marketing agency is a significant decision for a hotel or resort. The right partner will make your property easier to discover and more appealing to book; the wrong one can spend months and budget without moving the business. These ten questions help you compare agencies on what actually matters.
1. Have you worked with properties like ours?
Hospitality has its own rhythms: seasonality, OTAs, weddings and events, the gap between an enquiry and a booking. Ask to see work for properties of a similar size and type, and ask what the agency learned from them.
2. Who will actually do the work?
Meet the people who will plan, shoot, write and manage your account, not only the person who sells it. Ask whether production is in-house or outsourced.
3. Can we see your photography and film?
Visual content drives hotel marketing. Look at full galleries rather than a single highlight reel, and check that the images feel true to each property rather than identical in style.
4. How do you approach our website?
Ask how the agency would improve your website's speed on mobile, its booking or enquiry route, and its search visibility. A beautiful site that is slow or hard to book from is a missed opportunity. See our hotel website design approach.
5. How do you plan social media?
Good agencies plan content in advance around clear themes and a monthly calendar, rather than posting reactively. Ask to see an example calendar.
6. How do you run and measure paid ads?
For Meta ads, ask how campaigns are structured, how enquiries are tracked, and how the quality of leads is reviewed. Be cautious of guaranteed results; outcomes depend on the offer, budget, market and guest journey.
7. What will you report, and how often?
Agree the measures that matter to your business, such as enquiries, direct bookings and website visits by source, and how often you will review them together.
8. What do you need from our team?
Shoots need access and preparation; social media needs approvals; ads need timely offers. A clear understanding of your team's role avoids delays.
9. Who owns the content and accounts?
Confirm that your property owns its website, ad accounts, social profiles and the agreed usage of all photographs and films, and that you will receive organised files at handover.
10. How flexible is the engagement?
Ask about project-based work versus monthly retainers, notice periods, and what happens to work in progress if the engagement ends.
One partner or several?
Some properties use separate vendors for photography, website and ads. Others prefer one partner so that content, website and campaigns share one direction and one point of contact. Both can work; the second usually means less coordination for your team.
