A step-by-step checklist for boutique hotels and resorts: positioning, content, website, search, social, paid media and partnerships.

Guest cottages and palms beneath the hills

Boutique hotels rarely win by shouting louder than the chains. They win by being unmistakably themselves and making that easy to discover. This checklist sets out the order we recommend working in, from the foundations that every channel depends on to the campaigns that build on them.

1. Decide what the property stands for

Before any content is produced, agree in one or two sentences why a guest would choose this property over the alternatives nearby. It might be the heritage of the building, a particular view, the food, or the pace of a stay. Everything that follows, from photography to ad copy, should reinforce that idea. Our hotel branding service starts with exactly this conversation.

2. Invest in current photography and film

Guests decide with their eyes first. Outdated or inconsistent images undermine every other effort, on your website, OTAs, Google and social media alike. Plan a shoot around your most important room categories, the arrival experience, food and the moments that express your positioning. A short property film and a set of vertical clips will serve social media and ads for months. See our hotel photography and film production.

3. Make the website answer the guest's questions

Your website should help someone decide quickly: where you are, what kind of stay you offer, which room suits them, and how to check availability or enquire. Make sure it is fast on mobile, has a clear booking or enquiry route, and includes descriptive page titles so it can be found in search. Read more in our guide to hotel website design.

4. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

For many travellers, the first impression is a Google search or map result. Complete every field, choose accurate categories, upload real photographs, keep hours and contact details current, and respond to reviews. Ask happy guests to leave a review, and never offer incentives in return.

5. Keep OTA listings consistent

Online travel agencies bring visibility, but inconsistent descriptions and old photographs on them can confuse guests. Use the same core description, current images and accurate amenities everywhere, and give guests a reason to book directly, such as a flexible policy or a direct-booking extra.

6. Run social media as an editorial programme

Post with a plan rather than when there is time. Build a few content pillars around your positioning, such as the landscape, the kitchen, the people and the seasons, and schedule them in a monthly calendar. Short videos usually reach more people than static posts. Our social media management for hotels works this way.

7. Use paid media with clear goals

Meta ads can drive enquiries for weddings, long weekends or off-season offers when the creative, audience and landing page are aligned. Decide what you are measuring before you spend, track enquiries properly and review the quality of responses, not only the volume. See Meta ads for hotels and resorts.

8. Partner with the right creators

Travel creators can introduce a property to a new audience, but fit matters more than follower count. Choose creators whose audience matches your guests, agree a clear brief and usage rights, and plan the stay so the content shows the experience honestly. Our guide to influencer marketing for boutique hotels covers this in detail.

9. Review, learn and repeat

Set a monthly rhythm to review enquiries, bookings by source, website visits and the content that performed. Keep what works, retire what does not, and plan the next season's content before it arrives.

Where to start

If your photography is more than a couple of years old or your website is slow on mobile, start there: both affect every other channel. If those are strong, focus on your Google Business Profile and a consistent social programme.
